Johnson & Johnson will face the first of many transvaginal mesh lawsuits this year. The first bellwether trial involving the company’s Gynecare Prolift vaginal mesh product is scheduled to begin Feb. 10 in federal court in West Virginia. Bellwether trials are intended to set the tone for lawsuits involving similar allegations against one company.
Six different product manufacturers face similar lawsuits for transvaginal mesh products. Plaintiffs allege serious injuries resulting from complications with the vaginal mesh products such as mesh erosion. Injuries include organ perforation, infection and chronic pain.
Lawsuits against the six companies have been consolidated into the District Court for the Southern District of West Virginia before Judge Joseph R Goodwin. Other vaginal mesh product makers facing bellwether trials this year include American Medical Systems (Endo) and Boston Scientific.
The first bellwether trial against American Medical Systems is schedule to start on April 7 and Boston Scientific will face its first bellwether trial on March 10.
According to court documents, there are nearly 40,000 transvaginal mesh lawsuits pending in the six MDLS.
