Flood Law Group is warning men that the antipsychotic drug Risperdal may be linked to breast growth in males. The drug has been associated with a condition called gynecomastia, which is the enlargement of breast tissue in males. This can be particularly concerning for young men that are still developing.
Gynecomastia is not a life-threatening disease, but it can be uncomfortable and can lead to emotional and psychological problems. Surgery can be performed to correct the condition.
Johnson & Johnson settled its first Risperdal gynecomastia lawsuit in September 2012 and there are more to follow. To date, there have been more than 100 lawsuits filed against the drug maker involving claims of the development of breast tissue in young men.
Young men who are prescribed Risperdal should see their doctor immediately if they begin to experience breast discomfort or tenderness, swelling of one or both breasts and/or nipple discharge.
Risperdal (risperidone) is used to treat schizophrenia as well as symptoms of bipolar disorder and irritability in children with autism. It is sometimes prescribed in conjunction with antidepressants to treat severe depression.
The drug increases a person’s levels of prolactin, which is a hormone used to stimulate breast growth and milk production. This is what leads to the development of gynecomastia in some males. For females, the drug can result in milk production.
Flood Law Group is alerting male patients and their families of the connection between gynecomastia and Risperdal. The law firm is currently reviewing cases on behalf of patients affected by this condition.
