Benicar® Gastrointestinal Side Effects
A link between Benicar® and gastrointestinal side effects has been confirmed. In 2013, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) ordered makers of Benicar® and the generic form of the drug to add warnings about the risk of sprue-like enteropathy to the drugs' labels.
Sprue-like enteropathy is a serious gastrointestinal problem that has symptoms similar to celiac disease. Symptoms include:
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Chronic diarrhea
- Rapid weight loss
- Intestinal inflammation
- Electrolyte abnormalities
Some patients do not experience these symptoms until years after starting Benicar® treatments. In the most severe cases, patients will require hospitalization for their symptoms. According to the FDA, symptoms usually stop once a patient stops taking Benicar®.
Researchers linked Benicar® use to sprue-like enteropathy in 2012 after 22 patients reported symptoms similar to celiac disease. None of the patients tested positive for celiac disease, so it was confirmed that these patients had Benicar®-induced sprue-like enteropathy. Later in the same year, researchers from the American College of Gastroenterology identified 40 additional cases of sprue-like enteropathy in persons taking Benicar®.
Other potential side effects include back pain, abdominal pain, problems breathing and swallowing, flu-like symptoms, dizziness, rhabdomyolosis and kidney failure.
