Crestor®

Crestor® (rosuvastatin), a drug to lower cholesterol, has been linked to an increase in the risk of some serious side effects. Some researchers believe that Crestor® and other medications in its class (statins) can increase the risk of cardiomyopathy and other dangerous heart problems.

Crestor® Cardiomyopathy

Cardiomyopathy is a disease in which the heart muscle becomes enlarged and weak. The condition makes it difficult for the heart to pump and deliver blood. People with cardiomyopathy might not experience symptoms at first, however, as the disease advanced, the following symptoms might occur:

  • Difficulty breathing, even when at rest
  • Rapid heartbeats
  • Bloating in the stomach
  • Swelling in the feet, legs and ankles
  • Fatigue
  • Dizziness, fainting

If you are taking Crestor® or another statin medication, you should be aware of the symptoms of cardiomyopathy. If you experience any of the symptoms, you should visit your doctor right away. You should seek emergency medical help if you experience severe chest pain, extreme problems breathing or fainting.

Cardiomyopathy can lead to other serious complications, including heart failure, blood clots, heart murmurs, cardiac arrest and death.

Treatment is meant to manage the symptoms and prevent the condition from getting worse. Treatment options include a variety of medications to control the symptoms, a special type of pacemaker to coordinate the contractions between the right and left ventricles and open heart surgery.
