What is the Da Vinci® Surgical Robot?
The da Vinci® surgical robot is made by Intuitive Surgical and was approved by the FDA in 2000 and has become an increasingly popular tool used to assist surgeons conducting minimally invasive procedures. To use the robot, a surgeon operates complex hand and foot controls to manipulate the four arms of the device, which are inserted into the patient's body through tiny incisions. One arm is used to keep the operating field clear while the surgeon uses two more arms to perform the surgery, which is viewable through a tiny camera on the fourth arm.
There are many proposed benefits to surgery conducted with the da Vinci® surgical robot, including less scarring, less pain for the patient, and much shorter recovery times compared to traditional "open" surgical procedures. However, multiple patients have been seriously injured or even killed during or after surgery with the da Vinci® robot, possibly due to defects in the device or inadequate surgeon training. Common injuries upon which da Vinci® surgical robot lawsuits may be based include:
- Burns
- Infections
- Organ perforation, tears, or other damage
- Hematomas
- Fistulas
- Brain damage
- Incontinence
- Death
