Defective Products
DePuy Orthopaedics, a division of Johnson & Johnson, recalled two types of hip implants in August 2010 after discovering that many of the systems were failing early. The two recalled hip implants are the ASR™ XL Acetabular System (sold worldwide) and the ASR™ Hip Resurfacing System (sold only outside the U.S.).
If you or a loved one has experienced problems as a result of a recalled DePuy hip implant, you might be eligible for financial compensation. At Flood Law Group, we believe that patients are entitled to much more than just the cost of revision surgery. If you've suffered pain or other complications that have required you to undergo a second surgery, we may be able to help you. Contact us for a free review of your case.
DePuy ASR™ Recall
At the time of the recall, the Johnson & Johnson Company announced that 12 to 13 percent of the hip implants would fail in as few as 3 to 5 years. A British orthopedists' group came out with a much higher failure rate after the devices were recalled. According to the British Orthopedic Association and the British Hip Society, the failure rate of the DePuy hip implants is actually closer to 21 percent after 4 years and 49 percent after 6 years.
Symptoms of a Failing Hip Implant
According to reports, some patients had problems with the acetabular cup (socket) component of the implant becoming loose. The acetabular cup is the part of the implant that fits into the concave part of the pelvis (the socket) that forms the hip joint.
Signs and symptoms of a loose acetabular cup include:
- Severe pain in the groin
- Swelling in the groin, hip or lower back
- Difficulty standing and walking
- Popping or clicking sounds when walking
- A feeling that the hip is out of place
When a hip implant fails, the only way to fix it is surgery. Having a second surgery to replace a hip implant is a painful and debilitating process. In many cases, recovery will be more difficult than the initial surgery and may require more down time.
If you or someone you love suffered as a result of a failed hip implant, we may be able to help you recover compensation for your suffering. To schedule a free case review, please contact our DePuy hip implant lawyers today.
