Dangerous Drugs
At this time, our attorneys are investigating a number of antibiotic paralysis lawsuits on behalf of clients who have suffered paralysis or neuropathy (nerve damage) as a side effect of using Levaquin or similar antibiotic.
Levaquin Dangerous Side Effects
Levaquin (levofloxacin) belongs to the class of antibiotics known as fluoroquinolones, along with Cipro (ciprofloxacin), Avelox (moxifloxacin), and a number of other drugs. These are the most highly prescribed antibiotics in the world: according to a New York Times1 article, Levaquin was the most frequently sold antibiotic in the United States in 2010. However, the same article also states that the makers of Levaquin are currently facing more than 2,000 personal injury lawsuits brought by patients who suffered severe or even fatal side effects of the drug.
Levaquin Peripheral Neuropathy
In addition to multiple potentially devastating side effects, a number of individuals have reported suffering peripheral neuropathy as a Levaquin side effect. Peripheral neuropathy is a result of nerve damage which affects the way the body's nerves communicate with the brain. According to the Mayo Clinic2, depending on which nerves are affected by Levaquin peripheral neuropathy, symptoms may include:
- Numbness or tingling in hands or feet, possibly spreading to legs and arms
- Pain
- Burning
- Sensations similar to an electric shock
- Sensitivity to touch
- Changes to skin, nails, or hair
- Lack of muscle control or coordination
- Digestive problems
- Incontinence
- Changes in blood pressure
- Dizziness
- Paralysis
A number of medical studies have associated Levaquin and similar antibiotics with peripheral neuropathy, and the FDA issued warnings about Levaquin peripheral neuropathy in September 2004 and in August 2013. This most recent warning stated that Levaquin peripheral neuropathy could last for more than a year after a patient stops taking Levaquin.
