Luvox®

Luvox® (generic name: fluvoxamine) is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) antidepressant. It is used for the treatment of social anxiety and obsessive-compulsive disorders.

A Powerful Drug

Luvox® and Fluvoxamine CR (controlled release) are used to treat:

• OCD (obsessive-compulsive disorder)
• Social anxiety disorder

They are also prescribed for:

• Major depressive disorder
• Panic disorder
• Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)

Luvox®/fluvoxamine really hit the news cycle in 1999, after the Columbine High School shootings in Colorado. It was revealed that one of the two teenagers who killed and injured many classmates and staff, and then committed suicide (Eric Harris) was on a fluvoxamine regimen. Solvay Pharmaceuticals pulled Luvox off of the U.S. market in 2002.

Luvox® and Birth Defects

Like all selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, Luvox® has a very powerful effect on the brain, and a very broad range of possible side effects, including many congenital (present at birth) defects. These include:

• Pulmonary (breathing) defects
• Cardiac (heart and circulation) defects
• Malformations of the abdominal wall, skull, and/or limbs
