Strollers Recalled Due to Strangulation or Falling Risks

Two stroller companies are recalling certain models of their products because of the dangers of children strangling or falling out.

Peg Perego is recalling about 223,000 strollers because they can cause children to become trapped and strangled. Kolcraft Enterprises, Inc. is recalling about 5,600 strollers because they may cause children to fall and also present a risk of choking.

Strollers being recalled by Peg Perego were manufactured between January 2004 and September 2007. The models being recalled are the Pliko-P3 and the Venezia. The only strollers being recalled have a child tray and a one-cup holder. Peg Perego strollers not being recalled are those with a bumper bar in front of the child or a tray with two cup holders.

Peg Perego explained that its recalled strollers were manufactured before the 2008 institution of a voluntary industry standard for increasing the height of the opening between the tray and the bottom of the seat. The increased size of the openings prevents infants from being trapped or strangled.

A number of retailers sold the strollers, including Babies R Us and Buy Buy Baby.

The company asks parents to stop using the strollers right away and call Perego at 888-734-6020 for a free repair kit. Consumers may also go to the company’s website for information and to request the repair kit.

Kolcraft Enterprises Inc. is recalling the Contours Options LT double strollers, model number ZT012, although no injuries have been reported. They were sold between February and July.

One problem with the stroller that could allow the child to fall out is a design error in the front wheel assembly that makes it more likely to break, according to the product recall.

In addition, defective nuts and screws supporting the basket might become detached. The detached nuts could cause a child to choke.

Six consumers have reported that the front caster wheels have broken and two others have contacted Kolcraft to let them know the screws and nuts became detached. The latter strollers with the problem screws and nuts were made in January and February.

The strollers being recalled come in two colors: black strollers with red canopies and accents and gray strollers with yellow canopies and accents.

The Kolcraft strollers were sold at Burlington Coat Factory, juvenile specialty stores, and on the websites of Amazon, Target, and other retailers.
