Prilosec Side Effects: Anemia, B-12 Deficiency

Prilosec (omeprazole) belongs to the class of drugs known as proton pump inhibitors (PPIs), along with similar drugs such as Nexium, Prevacid, Dexilant, Aciphex, and Protonix. These drugs prevent the production of acid in the stomach lining to reduce symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), which affect as many as 4 in 10 Americans, according to a New York Times article. However, many nutrients vital to a healthy body need to be processed by stomach acid in order to be properly absorbed. As a result of this, a number of long-term Prilosec users have been diagnosed with anemia. There are two forms of anemia: one is the result of insufficient iron in the blood, and the other results from low levels of the vitamin B-12.

Prilosec Iron Deficiency Anemia

Insufficient acid in the stomach caused by using Prilosec or other PPIs can make it difficult for the body to absorb iron and may lead to iron deficiency anemia. When the body doesn't get enough iron, it is unable to produce the substance that allows red blood cells to carry oxygen.

Iron deficiency anemia may cause the following symptoms:

  • Fatigue
  • Shortness of breath
  • Paleness
  • Chest Pain
  • Headache
  • Infections
  • Dizziness
  • Cold hands and feet
  • Sore or inflamed tongue
  • Rapid heartbeat
  • Non-food cravings (ice, dirt)
  • Reduced appetite
  • Restless legs syndrome

If a person suffers from iron deficiency anemia, he or she could experience cognitive problems, heart problems, pregnancy complications, or even delayed growth and development in children.

Prilosec B-12 Anemia

Reports indicate that patients who use a PPI such as Prilosec for more than 2 years are 65 percent more likely to suffer Vitamin B-12 deficiency anemia. Common symptoms of Vitamin B-12 anemia include:

  • Personality changes and depression
  • Fatigue
  • Shortness of breath
  • Weight loss
  • Muscle weakness
  • Pale or yellowish skin
  • Irregular heartbeat
  • Unsteady movements
  • Forgetfulness

If left untreated, Vitamin B-12 deficiency anemia may lead to pregnancy complications and nervous system problems which may become permanent.

Suffering from Prilosec Anemia or Low B-12?

Many experts believe that PPIs such as Prilosec are over-prescribed. Though these drugs are only recommended to be used for 8-12 weeks, many patients use them for life when simple dietary changes could help alleviate symptoms such as heartburn. If you have been diagnosed with a form of anemia, either low iron or low Vitamin B-12, there is a possibility that this may be attributed to your use of Prilosec.
