Dangerous Drugs
Propecia® (generic name: finasteride) is now the subject of a safety investigation by the FDA because of its link to permanent male sexual dysfunction. A study conducted at George Washington University found that Propecia® use can result in very serious sexual dysfunction side effects, such as:
- loss of libido (interest in sex)
- erectile dysfunction
- visible changes in the penis and scrotum
- hot flashes
- unexplained fatigue
Other Propecia® side effects are depression and male infertility.
In many of the subjects studied, the sexual dysfunction side effects continued for months or years after they stopped using Propecia®. There are already two class actions against Merck & Co., and the FDA is expected to have more to say about Propecia® and its alarming side effects.
Propecia® Side effects
The known side effects of Propecia® include:
- impotence
- abnormal ejaculation
- decreased ejaculatory volume
- gynecomastia (growing breasts)
- erectile dysfunction
- testicular pain
These side effects don't seem worth the benefit of keeping one's hairline.
Sexual Side effects
Merck admits that these sexual side effects of Propecia® exist and that they may continue after a man stops using finasteride, which was first approved by the FDA in 1992 for the treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia (enlarged prostate), as Proscar.
It wasn't until 1997 that the FDA approved finasteride for hair growth, an effect of Proscar that had been noticed in Proscar-treated men. Merck jumped on the chance to make more money by marketing finasteride for hair growth — many millions of dollars' worth of worldwide sales of Propecia® are gathered every year by Merck & Co.
