Risperdal

Risperdal (risperidone) is an antipsychotic medication used to treat schizophrenia, symptoms of bipolar disorder and symptoms of irritability in autistic children. As with other drugs, Risperdal has been associated with a series of side effects, ranging from mild to moderate to severe. Among these side effects, one of the biggest problems associated with Risperdal use is a condition called gynecomastia, the enlargement of breast tissue in boys and men.

Although gynecomastia is not a life threatening disease, it is associated with pain and tenderness in the breasts and can result in embarrassment and other psychological and emotional problems. If you or someone you love developed gynecomastia after using Risperdal, you may be entitled to compensation to cover the cost of a mastectomy as well as for the emotional pain and suffering caused by the condition. Gynecomastia

Gynecomastia is the swelling of the breast tissue in boys or men, affecting one or both breasts. Symptoms include:

  • Swelling of the breast gland tissue
  • Breast tenderness

Boys and men who are prescribed Risperdal should seek medical attention if they begin to experience:

  • Breast swelling
  • Pain or tenderness in one or both breasts
  • Nipple discharge in one or both breasts

In some cases, the condition will go away on its own. But, in the more severe cases, patients will require surgery. Patients will generally need to undergo a mastectomy, which is surgery to remove the breast gland tissue. This surgery is typically done using small incisions. Liposuction is also sometimes used, but it only removes breast fat, not the breast gland tissue.
