Wellbutrin

The results of several well-controlled studies indicate that treatment with Wellbutrin (generic name, buproprion) during pregnancy can cause severe birth defects. For example, a 2010 study examined the births of 12,700 children and found that the babies of women who took Wellbutrin in their first trimester of pregnancy (when a woman may not yet even know that she is pregnant) were over two times more likely to have a very serious congenital heart defect.

This birth defect, known as "left outflow tract defect," restricts the blood flowing from the left chamber of the heart to the rest of the body. It often needs to be correctly surgically to save the baby's life.

In addition, a June 2011 study demonstrated that the use of Wellbutrin or similar medications during a woman's pregnancy may make the risk of autism in her baby twice as high.
