Yaz®/Yasmin® Drug Information

Yaz®, Yasmin® (Ocella) belong to a group of birth control pills that contain the hormone, d rospirenone. They are among the most commonly prescribed oral contraceptives today. But, like all birth control pills, these come with a range of possible side effects, ranging from minor to severe.

Women who are given a Yaz®, Yasmin® or Ocella prescription should tell their doctors if they have any of the following conditions before taking the birth control pills:

  • High blood pressure, varicose veins
  • High cholesterol
  • Thyroid problems
  • History of depression
  • Gallbladder disease
  • Diabetes
  • History of seizures of epilepsy
  • Tuberculosis
  • History of fibrocystic breast disease
  • History of blood clots
  • History of heart attack or stroke

Women who have kidney, liver or adrenal disease should not take Yaz®, because it can increase their risk for heart attack and other complications. Women who are pregnant should not take Yaz®, Yasmin or Ocella.

Yaz®/Yasmin® Side Effects

Among the more common, non-life threatening side effects of these birth control pills are mild nausea, breast tenderness, skin discoloration, hair loss, changes in appetite or weight, changes in menstrual cycle and decreased sex drive.

Women taking Yaz®, Yasmin® or Ocella should be aware of the more dangerous side effects associated with these drugs. It has been reported that taking a d rospirenone-containing birth control can increase a woman's risk of the following conditions:

  • Deep vein thrombosis (DVT)
  • Pulmonary embolism
  • Blood clots
  • Heart attack
  • Stroke
  • Death
  • Gallbladder problems

The drug labels have been changed to include safety warnings about the risk of blood clots. According to the drug labels, women taking birth control pills that contain the hormone d rospirenone may have an increased risk for developing blood clots than those taking other birth control pills.
